Superflat Demo

Unity3D

I just finished a demo with A* pathfinding to get my navigation going. Stopped texturing for now to get a bit of a demo going just to show you people what i’m trying to achieve.

You can view the demo at SuperFlat.nl.

There’s one textured building in there, you can tell that lighting needs a lot of work. no textures on anything else yet and all the characters are missing still. But i’m not going to start on characters till i’m done with all the terrain and surroundings. Mostly this is because i don’t have a lot of experience with character modelling and animation so i’m saving that till last so i can give it all my attention and get it right.

Somewhere along the lines i’ll get around to whipping up some of the conversation mechanics!

Texturing

Unity3D

Oh hai,

Been busy with various things, didn’t find a lot of time to get back to my work. Just got back from an intense training weekend with my tae kwondo club. Great fun i’ll tell you but my god the muscle ache!

Anyhow, i decided to try my hand at texturing. UVW unwrapping is fun in a way, i quite like it. Although to be fair right now it’s just simple shapes. Tried various different approaches to create the feel that i want for the “game”. Seeing as i based it on some of the old Playstation One games, i tried my hand at pixel art. Sadly this was waaaay to time consuming for me at the moment. After consulting some of the pixel artists at PixelJoint, i tried applying normal/realistic textures to my object and then turning off filtering in Unity3D on the imported materials resulting in nice pixelated textures. This could be further “enhanced” by reducing the player and editor quality to the fastest setting. Although that did seem to be a bit much and turning off the filtering proved to be enough to get the feel that i wanted.

Right now i’m still trying to figure out why 3D Max is difficult with psd files and alpha channels since this is causing some issues in Unity3D. See through objects and such :(

Unity3D

Sorry for the lack of updates but i’ve been busy brushing up my 3D skill with some courses. Made a cool 3D crazy scientist, quite educational.

Anyhow! On with the update!

So as I mentioned, I plan to build a new site for superflat.nl in the form of an old playstation-esque 3D game. I have an undying love for the platform (more so for the SNES but that didn’t quite fit with what i wanted). I decided to build a small ‘town’ and guest-star animated figures from the “Fabeltjes Krant“. Each character will be able to be interacted with and they will tell you something about the site or my person or my work, still working that bit out.

So far, most the big stuff has been modelled. Just need to bring in more fluff. Plants, trees and whatever else I concont. Tested what i made in the Unity3D engine and i must say it works amazingly good. Did notice that I need to flatten the terrain some more since it’s really edgy at the moment. Going to start texturing soon when i’m done with the last bit of models.

I’ll think about adding a little unity3D demo to the site when i feel it gives a bit of the effect that i want. Here’s some 3D wireframes.
